What Toyota Knows That GM Doesn't
clipped from edgehopper.com Do you know how many hourly jobs GM has laid off from 2006 to July 2008? Take a guess. How about 34,000? And now, they’re talking about another 5,500 layoffs. And now they’re asking you and your government for a bailout to end their troubled, outdated, low quality, wasteful production system. OK, here’s a better question. How many hourly jobs has Toyota’s American production system laid off in the same time frame? Zero. Toyota has halted production at its Texas and Indiana plants for the past 3 months. But the 4,500 people who work at those plants have not been laid off. What!?!?! How? Why? Toyota has a special culture, deep-rooted values, and respect for their workforce. It means that while these employees were not manufacturing automobiles, they were in training. the workers also spent some time painting the plants and even helped build Habitat for Humanity homes. And they were getting paid. Toyota believes that its people are its greatest investment and its greatest asset. |
Two Faced Kitten
A vet got more than he bargained for when a cat he was helping in labor gave birth to a two-headed kitten in Western Australia.
Veterinarian George Huber and nurse Louisa Burgess had to do a double take when the grey and white freak feline was born with two faces. ...The kitten eats out of just one mouth because of a cleft palate, but both its mouths meow simultaneously. And despite its deformity, Ms Burgess said the cat appeared healthy.
“It has a full tummy and it survived the night so that is a good sign,” she said. “It seems content, it meows and purrs.

Take a sneak peek at Black Friday deals | The Cheapskate - CNET News
Take a sneak peek at Black Friday dealsTake a sneak peek at Black Friday deals | The Cheapskate - CNET News

The rotten economy notwithstanding, Black Friday will undoubtedly produce the usual levels of retail insanity. If you're intrepid enough to brave long lines and deal-crazed crowds on the day after Thanksgiving, well, I salute you. And I offer you BlackFriday.info, a site that rounds up Black Friday ads well in advance so you can plan your shopping (i.e. figure out where you want to show up at 4 a.m.).As of Friday, the site has ads for about two dozen stores, including Best Buy, Radio Shack, and Staples.Truth be told, I'm not seeing any deals that are vastly superior to the kind of stuff I post daily. That's not me being self-congratulatory. It's me being surprised that stores aren't stepping up with lower prices. I mean, where's the $150 Blu-ray player? Or the $500 42-inch HDTV?Maybe we'll see better deals emerge as the big day draws closer. For now, I'm unimpressed. But if you find anything truly Cheapskate-worthy, by all means hit the comments section and let everyone know.A technology writer for more than 15 years, Rick Broida is a regular contributor to CNET and the author of more than a dozen books, including How to Do Everything with Your Palm Powered Handheld. Official Gmail Blog: Say hello to Gmail voice and video chat
I'm a big user of Gmail chat. Being able to switch from email to chat as needed, all within the same app, is really great for productivity. But people can only type so fast, and even with our new emoticons, there are still some things that just can't be expressed in a chat message. That's why today we're launching voice and video chat -- right inside Gmail. We've tried to make this an easy-to-use, seamless experience, with high-quality audio and video -- all for free. All you have to do is download and install the voice and video plugin and we take care of the rest. And in the spirit of open communications, we designed this feature using Internet standards such as XMPP, RTP, and H.264, which means that third-party applications and networks can choose to interoperate with Gmail voice and video chat.Once you install the plugin, to start a video chat, just click on the "Video & more" menu at the bottom of your Gmail chat window, and choose "Start video chat." You'll have a few seconds to make sure you look presentable while it's ringing, and then you'll see and hear your friend live, right from within Gmail. You can click the "pop-out" iconto make the video larger, or click the fullscreen iconin the upper left-hand corner for a fully immersive experience. 15 Desktop Blogging Tools Reviewed
By Glen Stansberry
Desktop blogging tools can benefit designers-bloggers in a number of ways. They provide extra functionality that can significantly speed up the blogging process for both newbies and professionals.
One of the main benefits of using a desktop client is the ability to comfortably write a post offline, and publish it later. Many clients also have a scheduled post feature, so you can define what time you would like to publish your articles. Some editors provide a spell checker, drafts saver, remote publishing and WYSIWYG-editor with advanced formatting options such as inserting media or structuring the post — they may be hard to deal with using standard online blogging-engines.
Let’s take a look at 15 desktop blogging editors which can speed up the blogging process. Some are free and some cost a few dollars, but in the end all of these editors can significantly improve your workflow, regardless of your skills.
